This tour is made for you: you will get to discover Sri Lanka, with its modern and ancient cities, tea plantations and national parks through a safari… and you will also climb up Adam’s Peak in order to see the unique “sacred footprint” at the top or admire the strong shadow of the peak falling on the valley below.

Day 1

Arrival in Negombo

Arrival at Colombo International Airport where you will be met by a representative of our local agency and taken to your hotel in Negombo.
Free time for lunch.
You will spend the afternoon taking a canoe trip in Muthurajawela, the lagoon between Negombo and Colombo. During this excursion you can observe thousands of local birds. The trip lasts three hours before returning to the hotel.

Day 2

Pinnawala - Dambulla

You will head for Pinnawala after breakfast to visit the elephant orphanage. You can watch as they get fed and go to the river to have a bath. These elephants end up at the orphanage after being abandoned by their mother or due to development projects resulting in deforestation.
Early afternoon you will drive to the cave-temple complex in Dambulla, dating from 1stcentury BC. The five caves used as sanctuaries have been a World Heritage Site since 1991 and their walls are covered with Buddhist murals. You will get to the hotel in Sigiriya around 6.30 p.m.

Day 3

Polonnaruwa - Sigiriya

After breakfast you will drive to Polonnaruwa, the second capital of the Sinhalese kingdom, dating from medieval times. You will visit the site on a mountain bike and see beautiful monuments such as a temple dedicated to Shiva, tall statues of Buddha and the former Royal Palace.
Lunch in a private home.
In the afternoon an excursion will take you to discover a small village and go for a walk across the verdant rice paddies. Your walk will also take you along Thabale Lake, covered with lotus flowers. After visiting a rice factory and its husking mills you will return to the hotel late afternoon.

Day 4

Sigiriya - Matale - Kandy

After breakfast You will go on an excursion to Lion Rock in Sigiriya where you can admire the former royal fortress at the summit, dating from 5thcentury AD, and the superb views over the surrounding valley. This monument has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982.
An elephant ride in  Habarana will allow you to see the surrounding landscape while resting your feet!
On the way to Kandy you will make several stops, including visits to a spice garden and a batik workshop in Matale. Free time for lunch.
In Kandy, you can discover several historic monuments and a famous relic, the Tooth of Buddha, at the Temple of Dalada Maligawa.
In the evening you will gain further insight into Sri Lankan culture by attending a traditional music and dance performance.

Day 5

Peradeniya - Kandy

After breakfast you will enjoy a walk in Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens, the largest of their kind in Sri Lanka and renowned for their wide variety of exotic trees and flowers.
In the afternoon you will visit Kandy, last capital of the Sinhalese kingdom. You will amble around the streets and market. On the lakeshore lies the Temple of the Tooth, which contains the most important Buddhist relic on the island.

Day 6

Kandy - Dalhousie

Departure in the morning for the tea-growing country. Several stops are scheduled, including the visit of a tea factory.
You will then head for Dalhousie, which lies at the base of Adam's Peak. A local guide will brief you about the ascent and accompany you to the top the next day.
Dinner and night at the 5-star Punsisi Guest House, in the midst of tea plantations (or similar).

Day 7

Adam's Peak - Nuwara Eliya

Departure at night time for the ascent of Adam's Peak with your local guide. Once you reach the summit you will discover a footprint: Christians and Muslims think it was made by Adam, whereas Buddhists think it was made by Buddha and Hinduists say it is Shiva's footprint. This sacred mark makes Adam's Peak a unique pilgrimage place for the four religions.
The next stop on your itinerary is Nuwara Eliya. On arrival you will get settled at the hotel and go for a stroll around the town centre and the park.

Day 8

Nuwara Eliya – Uda Walawe National Park

After breakfast you will hop onto a local train travelling through the tea country and giving you the opportunity to see many beautiful waterfalls. A climb up Little Adam's Peak has been organised in Ella. You will then be able to go for a swim at Ravana Falls before carrying on to Uda Walawe National Park, one of the most beautiful in Sri Lanka and reminiscent of African wildlife reserves. A safari will take place in the afternoon to get a closer look at the local wildlife.

Day 9

Ratnapura – Airport

Today you will go to Ratnapura, situated around 90 km from Colombo. It is known as “the City of Gems”, particularly diamonds. You will visit a mine before going to the gem market where extracted diamonds and other precious stones are bought and sold on a daily basis.
Finally, transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Adam's peak tour map

£590 per person, based on 2 people sharing a double room

The price includes :

  • Airport transfers on arrival/departure and 24/7 assistance;
  • Transport in an air-conditioned vehicle for airport transfers, for the tour itself and the visit of sites with an English-speaking driver guide. This is a private tour so you will be on your own (as a couple, a family or a group of friends, etc.) and your driver guide will escort you for the duration of your stay;
  • Hotel accommodation as stated in the itinerary (half board basis);
  • Entrance fees for the sites mentioned in the tour notes;
  • Photography permits except at the Temple of the Tooth of Buddha.
