Sri Lanka is a popular destination to travel with your kids. This itinerary of 8 days was conceptualized keeping in mind to suit children as well as adults. This tear-drop island has enough must-see sights and activities for everyone. Close encounters with elephants and feeding them, train ride, mind-boggling safari, gorgeous beaches are few examples of this enriching itinerary. Sri Lankans have an infectious smile, they are super fun with kids and warm-hearted. Our local agency selected numerous family-friendly accommodation for comfort. Despite having a spicy cuisine, you can easily find local food to suit everyone’s palate.

Day 1

Arrival in Sri Lanka - Negombo

Arrival at Colombo International Airport where you will be met by a representative of our local agency and taken to your hotel in Negombo (20 min). On your first afternoon you will enjoy a two-hour boat excursion which will take you to the heart of nature reserves. You will see extraordinary flora and fauna and discover the daily life of Sri Lankans. Return at sunset.
Dinner and night at the 3-star Catamaran Beach Hotel (or similar).

Day 2

Pinnawala and Dambulla

After breakfast you will drive to the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala (nearly 2 h 30 min travelling time). There are adult elephants, majestic and impressive, and you will also attend a feeding session for the baby elephants and watch them have a bath in the river. These orphans were adopted after being abandoned by their mother or due to the deforestation of their natural habitat. You will then continue to Dambulla early afternoon (1 h 30 min/2 h travelling time).
Here you will visit the temple which dates from 1stcentury BC and is listed as a World Heritage Site. You will see five magnificent caves used as sanctuaries, all of them adorned with murals representing Buddha. Later on you will visite the produce market in Dambulla.
Stroll around the alleys of the Dambulla wholesale market and enjoy the wonderful colours and flavours all around you.

Day 3

Visit of Sigiriya - Polonnaruwa and Giritale

After breakfast you will drive to the impressive Lion Rock in Sigiriya. You will visit the UNESCO-listed fortress dating from 5thcentury AD and admire the incredible views of the surrounding valley, then visit a batik workshop. Lunch in a private home will be a really immersive experience and a welcome rest.
After lunch you will drive to Polonnaruwa (1-hour driving time) and visit the archaeological site. This city became the capital of Sri Lanka in the 10th century AD, replacing Anuradhapura. The site extends over nearly 15 km² and has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. You will then go and visit a traditional mask-making workshop.
As an option, you will also have the opportunity to go on an elephant ride (15 € per person), have lunch in a private home or visit a local school.

Day 4

Giritale, Minneriya and Kandy

At sunrise you will go on a jeep safari to watch wild elephants in Minneriya National Park. You will then visit a spice garden where you will learn everything about spices such as lemongrass, ginger or cocoa. You will also get a cookery class at the heart of the garden.
You will drive on for 1 h-1 h 30 min before reaching Kandy. You will spend the afternoon visiting the centre, the amazing market and the >Temple of the Tooth, a World Heritage Site where the famous Relic of the Tooth of Buddha is kept. Towards the end of the day you will watch a traditional dance performance featuring an impressive fire walking demonstration. You will return to the Temple of the Tooth to attend the great evening ceremony.

Day 5

Peradeniya and return to Kandy

After breakfast you will visit the famous botanical gardens in Peradeniya where you will see a wide variety of exotic plants, flowers and trees. These gardens are near Kandy and cover 60 hectares, making them the largest of their kind in Sri Lanka. There is much to admire, including the superb orchids, the lovely avenue of palms and the giant bamboos.
This visit will be followed by afree afternoon in Kandy.

Day 6

Nuwara Eliya

Departure for a 3 h 30 min road trip to Nuwara Eliya. You will take the stunning road crossing Sri Lanka's tea-growing region and also enjoy a trip on a local train from Peradeniya to Nawalapitiya. Comfort isn't a strong point but the views are stunning, you can see many waterfalls and mingle with the Sri Lankan people. You will make several stops on the way to meet the local people. You will explore the great tea estates and admire the tea pickers' skill. A tea factory visit is also scheduled. The afternoon will be spent strolling around the centre and the park in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 7

Kitulgala and Colombo

You will head for Colomboin the morning (around 4 h 30 min driving time). Several stops are planned on the way, including in Kitulgala where a number of scenes from the famous movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai” were shot.  You can also go rafting in Kitulgala (supplement on site).
You will arrive in Colombo in the afternoon and visit the city.

Day 8

Colombo and transfer to the airport

Enjoy your free morning, then it's a one-hour drive to Colombo Airport.

£690 per person, based on 4 people sharing two double rooms

The price includes :

  • Airport transfers on arrival/departure and 24/7 assistance;
  • Transport in an air-conditioned vehicle (4-6 seats van) for airport transfers, for the tour itself and the visit of sites with an English-speaking driver guide. This is a private tour so you will be on your own (as a couple, a family or a group of friends, etc.) and your driver guide will escort you for the duration of your stay;
  • Hotel accommodation as stated in the itinerary (half board basis);
  • Entrance fees for the sites mentioned in the tour notes;
  • Photography permits except at the Temple of the Tooth of Buddha.
